Belle of Louisville holds onto Silver Antlers for another year

One of the Kentucky Derby Festival’s beloved events returned for another year Wednesday, and the winner will be keeping the Silver Antlers right here in Louisville.As per tradition, the Great Steamboat Race took off around 6 pm on the Ohio River. Last year, the winner was the Belle of Louisville, and that was the case again Wednesday.The Belle of Louisville took on the Belle of Cincinnati, as well as the newcomer, American Countess. The Belle of Louisville was officially declared the winner after 8:30 pm This was the 60th running of the Great Steamboat Race. The 14-mile race starts and ends at the Clark Memorial Bridge.In the video player below: Check out footage from this year’s raceWednesday morning, the captains of the two Belle steamboats were at Churchill Downs and talked a little trash with one another. โ€œWell, I’m looking forward to some cheating that you’re going to do,โ€ said Allen Bernstein, captain of the Belle of Cincinnati, to his rival. “Well, I’m looking for the same thing,” shot back Mike Doty, the Belle of Louisville’s skipper.It was all in good fun, however, as the captains were just excited to be back on the river and enjoying the race after two years of the pandemic. So were the many fans that turned out to watch the race from the waterfront and on the vessels. Also, new this year, Brough Brothers Bourbon was named the official bourbon of the Great Steamboat Race. Brough Brothers is the first Black-owned distillery in Kentucky.The Belle of Louisville also won in 2019. There was no race in 2020 due to the pandemic.
