Intel “Alder Lake-HX” specifications leaked, up to 16-cores with overclocking and PCIe 5.0 support for enthusiast-class laptops

Intel Alder Lake-HX enthusiast mobile platform with PCIe Gen5 and overclocking

At Vision event on May 10th, Intel will introduce its latest series of processors codenamed Alder Lake-HX. The series are to become the first mobile lineup featuring 16 cores.

Intel will put full desktop Alder Lake silicon on a BGA package. One of the slides confirms that the BGA package will have the same size as LGA for desktop (45 x 37.5 mm), the only difference is the height, reduced from 4.4mm to 2.0mm.

But Alder Lake-HX is much more. This is a new class of 55W ‘Enthusiast’ CPUs to be offered for high-end gaming and workstation systems. It will feature increase core count, more power and more PCIe lanes.

And speaking of PCI Express, Alder Lake-HX is the first PCIe Gen5 enabled platform for laptops. Furthermore, it has a total of 48 PCIe lanes (Gen5 x16+ Gen4 x20 + Gen3 x 12). That’s an increase over Alder Lake-H (Gen4 x16 + Gen3 x12).

Alder Lake HX is all about overclocking. It supports DDR5 with XMP 3.0 profiles and new feature called Dynamic Memory Boost. Furthermore, the series support Efficient-core overclocking, updated Intel Speed Optimizer and Extreme Tuning Utility. More importantly, Intel claims that all HX SKUs support overclocking.

The specifications of the series have not changed compared to the rumors. We are looking at 16 cores boosting up to 5.0 GHz for at least two SKUs. All HX CPUs ship with the same base power of 55W and boost power limit up to 157W, an increase of 42W over Alder Lake-H series.

Furthermore, because new CPUs are based on desktop silicon, the GPU core count has decreased to 32 or 16 depending on the variant. We are not aware of any system that would only feature the HX CPU, as all gaming/workstation notebooks with these CPUs are to feature dedicated GPU.
